US pipeline down 3.6% in November: STR

The total active U.S. hotel development pipeline comprised 2,586 projects totaling 299,201 rooms in November, a 3.6% decrease in the number of rooms in the total active pipeline compared to November 2011 according to new data from STR.

Among the nine U.S. regions, the East North Central region reported the largest increase in rooms in the In Construction phase, rising 155.6% to 7,216 rooms. Four other regions reported increases in rooms under construction of more than 50%: Middle Atlantic, up 80.2% to 15,556 rooms, New England, up 80.2% to 1,238 rooms, East South Central, up 63.3% to 5,582 rooms and West South Central, up 61.8% to 9,586 rooms. The West North Central region posted the only decrease in rooms under construction, falling 0.8% to 3,972 rooms.

The West North Central region reported the largest increase in rooms in the total active pipeline, rising 19.8% to 15,915 rooms. The Mountain region followed with a 16.5-percent increase to 31,583 rooms in the total active pipeline. The South Atlantic region posted the largest decrease in rooms in the total active pipeline, falling 17.3% to 64,369 rooms, followed by the East South Central region, which was down 15.6% to 19,251 rooms.
