Urban Cowboy, a design-forward boutique hospitality brand with properties in Nashville, the Catskills and Denver, has partnered with Collective Retreats Governors Island to open the Urban Cowboy Tent, a new accommodation at the six-acre glamping retreat located an eight-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan.
The project, created with hospitality firm Dovetail + Co, extends a partnership that began at Urban Cowboy Lodge in the Catskills. Reservations open Aug. 14. The tent is available through the end of November and will return for the 2027 season.
The 325-square-foot tent overlooks New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. It includes an ensuite bathroom and an antique patinated French cast-iron soaking tub positioned to face the statue. Design elements include red Pendleton Harding-pattern fabric cut into wall and ceiling panels and a bespoke upholstered headboard, along with El Paso Saddle Blanket rugs. Vintage pieces such as antique lanterns and 1920s canteens were sourced from Beacon Flea Market and Elephant Trunk. Bath amenities include Bubble Bath & Bar Soap from Species by the Thousands. Found objects, including antique artwork, repurposed boat oars and a vintage radio, are displayed throughout the space.
The tent was designed by Lyon Porter, Urban Cowboy co-founder and creative director of Cowboy Creative. Kevin Jacob Design LLC, which has also worked on Urban Cowboy Lodge & Resort, contributed custom elements including hand-painted stencil work, signage and mounted deer antlers.
“The Urban Cowboy Tent at Collective Retreats, like Urban Cowboy Lodge, embodies the kind of unexpected hospitality experiences we strive to create at Dovetail + Co: immersive destinations that invite guests to experience a place in an entirely new way,” said Phil Hospod, founder and chief executive officer of Dovetail + Co. “By bringing together Urban Cowboy’s distinctive aesthetic with the natural setting and unique character of Collective Retreats Governors Island, we’ve created an experience that celebrates both brands and encourages connection, discovery and memorable stays.”
“An authentic Urban Cowboy experience is always relevant and meant to be transportive,” said Lyon Porter, co-founder of Urban Cowboy. “This collaboration marks a meaningful return to New York City, where Urban Cowboy first began with our bed and breakfast in Williamsburg. Collective Retreats at Governors Island presented an opportunity to reimagine the spirit of Urban Cowboy in an entirely new setting that feels both immersed in nature and connected to the city.”
