Union goes on strike at select Hyatt properties

NORTH AMERICA Several branches of the Unite Here hotel workers union have gone on strike at select Hyatt Hotels Corp. properties in the United States and Canada.

Picket lines have formed outside at least five hotels—Hyatt Regency O’Hare near Chicago, Andaz West Hollywood and Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in California, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa in Honolulu and Hyatt Regency Toronto. All three hotels remain open to guests.

At the Toronto hotel, union leaders say the strike is scheduled to be a one-day event.

In Chicago, it is unclear how long the union plans to remain off the job, although one union representative expects it to last “a day or two.” The strike follows an unannounced job action earlier this week at the downtown Sheraton Hotel and Towers.

Workers at more than a dozen other Hyatt hotels in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and elsewhere have authorized strikes but have not yet walked off the job.
