Trailborn Hotels & Resorts has opened Hill House at Trailborn Mendocino, the company’s first West Coast property and its debut in Northern California.
The 44-room retreat is the first of two properties forming Trailborn Mendocino, an 89-room destination that will be completed when the Mendocino Hotel reopens in early 2027 following an extensive renovation.
Hill House is a transformation of the former Hill House Inn, overlooking Mendocino Village above the Pacific Ocean. Designed in partnership with HBA San Francisco, the property preserves original elements, including the millwork, bar and main staircase, paired with updated interiors and a Cabot Cove Detective Library referencing Murder, She Wrote, which was filmed on the property.
“Our goal was to preserve what people have always loved about Hill House while thoughtfully reimagining it for a new generation of travelers,” said Mike Weiss, co-founder & co-CEO of Trailborn Hotels & Resorts. “From the guest rooms and public spaces to the amenities and programming, every aspect of the experience was designed to reflect the character, beauty, and spirit of Mendocino.”

Hill House Wine & Grocer offers local provisions, wines and picnic fare, while Pizza Standard Time serves wood-fired pizzas, seasonal dishes, cocktails and desserts.
The property includes an event venue for weddings, retreats, corporate offsites and community gatherings, with programming such as live music, wine tastings and guided adventures. Nearby activities include kayaking, horseback riding and winery visits.
“Hill House marks Trailborn’s West Coast debut and the beginning of a long-term commitment to Mendocino,” said Ben Weinberg, co-founder and co-CEO of Trailborn Hotels & Resorts. “Together with The Mendocino Hotel, we’re honored to help revitalize two beloved landmarks, elevating them for the future while preserving the character and sense of place that have made them meaningful to the community for generations.”
The Mendocino Hotel, the second phase of Trailborn Mendocino, opens in early 2027 with additional guest rooms, a new restaurant and revitalized public spaces.
Through Trailborn’s “Keep Extraordinary” initiative, a portion of direct bookings supports the Mendocino Land Trust, which protects more than 40,000 acres in the county. Hill House at Trailborn Mendocino is a founding brand of the Outdoor Collection by Marriott Bonvoy, accessible to more than 270 million Bonvoy members, while continuing to operate independently under the Trailborn brand.
