Spain hoteliers seek end to fad of diving from balconies

BALEARIC ISLANDS Hoteliers in Spain’s Balearic Islands resort region are cracking down on an alarming trend in which hotel guests are diving into pools from balcony ledges.

Known among practitioners as “balconing,” the daredevil fad is not new, but it does seem to be gaining in popularity this summer, local hoteliers say. Balearic authorities say four people have been killed this year balconing, with another 30 estimated accidents causing injury.

Hoteliers have begun warning guests that they are taking a zero-tolerance approach to the act, evicting all who try it.
