Sol Meliá announces luxury hotel project in Indonesia

SURABAYA, INDONESIA Sol Meliá will manage a new 5-star hotel in Indonesia, Meliá Adhiwangsa Surabaya, slated to open in 2013. It will be the company’s fifth property in the country.

The 300-key hotel will be located on the north coast of the island of Java in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia and an important industrial and business center. Meliá Adhiwangsa Surabaya will form part of a major leisure development that includes a shopping mall and golf course, both already open.

The hotel is owned by Bukit Darmo Property Group. Hotel amenities will include a spa, swimming pool, children’s area, two restaurants, meeting facilities and access to the golf course.

Indonesia is a market with significant importance to Sol Meliá, as it is home to the group’s first international property beyond its native Spain; Meliá Bali opened 25 years ago.

Sol Meliá considers Asia Pacific to be key to its future growth. “In addition to being a major focus for development, travel destinations in Asia-Pacific such as Indonesia are also the preferred destinations of Chinese outbound travel—a market which is increasing exponentially every year,” says CEO Gabriel Escarrer.

The company’s first China hotel, Gran Meliá Shanghai, opened in December 2009. Last month, the company announced a strategic alliance with Jin Jiang International Hotels to support Sol Meliá’s development in China.
