Shangri-La Tokyo suspends operations

TOKYO The luxury Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, has suspended operations until at least mid-April, following the March 11 natural disaster and resulting nuclear emergency that has ravaged Japan.

The 200-key hotel will not be accepting new guests until further notice, according to a statement on the hotel’s website. “Bookings will resume as soon as the energy supply and normal hotel operation can and has been restored,” the statement says. “We appreciate your understanding as our thoughts remain with the people of Japan during this incredibly challenging time.”

A spokeswoman says the hotel hopes to reopen by April 16. Until then, about 300 staff members have been placed on paid leave.

Another luxury hotel, The Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, remains open but has temporarily closed facilities including many of its bars and restaurants in an effort to conserve energy, a spokeswoman tells Agence-France Presse. The hotel hopes to reopen fully by Saturday.
