Shangri-La Group has announced Songtei Kyoto, Shangri-La Signatures, the latest addition to its ultra-luxury Shangri-La Signatures collection.
The 77-key hotel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto, Japan, set on the former residence of the Kyoto Shoshidai, an important historical site in the city. The hotel will welcome its first guests in late 2026, with additional facilities opening progressively ahead of a full property unveiling in early 2027.
The property will feature 77 rooms and suites designed to frame views of Nijo Castle’s Kita Ote-mon (Great North Gate), its gardens and the surrounding landscape, in line with the property’s historical setting.
Rooted in local heritage and guided by a philosophy of intentional design, Songtei Kyoto will curate experiences across art, wellness, gastronomy and storytelling, drawing on the design of Kyoto’s Edo-period residences through a contemporary lens.
The name Songtei references the pine (“Song”), a symbol of longevity and good fortune, and “Tei,” an invitation to feel at home. According to the Group, the name reflects Shangri-La’s heritage and the spirit of Kyoto, where hospitality and a sense of place are intertwined.
The property will include a wellness sanctuary with a private spa, indoor and outdoor hot baths and an indoor pool and a gym. Its culinary program will span an all-day dining lounge, a Chinese restaurant, a kappo-sushi counter and an evening bar. Select facilities will open progressively ahead of the full unveiling in early 2027.
Shangri-La Signatures is Shangri-La Group’s collection of ultra-luxury boutique hotels. The collection debuted in May 2026 with The Silk Lakehouse, Shangri-La Hangzhou, which opened on the shores of West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hangzhou, China.
