Hotels have spent years refining nearly every visible part of the guest journey, from arrival rituals to room design to the amenities that make a stay feel considered. Water, however, often remains one of the least examined touchpoints: essential to every guest, operationally repetitive for staff and closely tied to how a property expresses comfort, care and sustainability.
For decades, hotels have relied on single-use plastic bottles. While convenient, this model creates waste along with recurring purchasing, delivery, storage and restocking costs. Each step may seem small on its own; together, they create an operational system that affects labor, storage, waste streams and the guest’s perception of the property.
Today, hospitality leaders are asking a different question: What if water could elevate the guest experience, advance sustainability goals and reduce operating costs?

This question guided Hotel Bardo in Savannah, Ga., to intentionally reconsider the role of hydration in the overall guest experience. “At Hotel Bardo, Vivreau offered a water solution that aligned on every level: beautifully designed, functionally refined and operationally smart. The benefits are undeniable. Even within our first year, the cost savings over bottled service were tangible. And the guest response has been consistently positive. It’s a detail people notice and genuinely appreciate,” said Huxley Hogeboom, EVP of Design & Development of LEFT LANE Hospitality, who developed the hotel.
Rather than relying on traditional in-room plastic water bottles, Hotel Bardo installed water refill stations on every guest floor, giving guests convenient access to chilled, filtered still and sparkling water. Guests can refill the glass bottles provided in each room or use their own reusable bottles, reflecting how many travelers now move through the day with hydration close at hand.
For guests, the experience changes the role water plays during a stay. Instead of treating it as a limited in-room allotment or an extra charge, the hotel makes chilled still and sparkling water readily available. That shift is small in physical terms, but meaningful in how it signals generosity, convenience and attention to everyday comfort.
The same thinking extends to Saint Bibiana, Hotel Bardo’s restaurant. An on-site high-volume bottling system supports chilled still and sparkling water for table service, allowing the restaurant to reduce dependence on imported prepackaged bottles while maintaining the presentation expected in a luxury dining environment.
The benefits extend beyond guest satisfaction. By replacing single-use bottled water, hotels can reduce the costs associated with purchasing, shipping, storing, stocking and disposing of packaged water. Back-of-house storage requirements shrink, staff spend less time replenishing rooms and fewer deliveries mean less operational complexity.
Luxury and sustainability no longer need to compete. Hotel Bardo’s approach shows how a basic utility can become a more considered part of the guest journey. When water is designed as an experience rather than managed as a disposable item, it can support hospitality, sustainability, operational efficiency and create measurable business value at the same time.
