Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has launched a second Canadian test of its popular chicken sandwich that sparked a frenzy at U.S. restaurants last summer, in advance of a systemwide introduction in Canada this fall.
Popeyes is now selling the sandwich at 11 restaurants in southwestern Ontario as a test. It can be bought in London, Ont., and the towns of Chatham, Sarnia, St. Thomas, Strathroy and Windsor following a test in the province of Alberta earlier this year. The chicken sandwich in Canada will be identical to the menu item that caused long lines at U.S. restaurants last year — and even a stabbing by an irate customer who was shut out. The popularity of the Popeyes sandwich also sent competitors scrambling to develop a menu item to compete with the Popeyes product.
The Restaurant Brand International chain is expected to offer the chicken sandwich across Canada this fall, according to media reports.
