Planters Inn announces property renovation in Charleston

Planters Inn today announced a property-wide renovation of its Charleston hotel, with completion scheduled for January 2027. The multi-phase project will include all guestrooms and suites, public spaces and the Peninsula Grill restaurant.

Planters Inn is located in Charleston’s Historic District and has operated since 1844, making it a 182-year-old property. The renovation will retain elements including Southern hospitality, residential-style design and Lowcountry cuisine.

“Few places capture the spirit of Charleston quite like Planters Inn,” said Giorgio Di Pietro, GM. “Located within one of the city’s most historic buildings, Planters Inn has become a beloved part of Charleston’s hospitality landscape. As stewards of this remarkable property, our role is to honor its history while thoughtfully evolving the experience for today’s traveler, ensuring it continues to resonate for generations to come.”

Guestrooms and suites will be designed with interiors inspired by Charleston’s historic mansions. The lobby, parlor and courtyard, designed by landscape architect Sheila Wertimer, will also be refreshed.

Peninsula Grill, led by Executive Chef John Ondo, will remain open to guests and the public in the early weeks of the renovation, with its own refresh beginning in late August. The restaurant will focus on seasonal Lowcountry cuisine.

“Peninsula Grill has always been central to the identity of Planters Inn,” said John Ondo, executive chef. “This next chapter allows us to celebrate the dishes and traditions our guests return for, while continuing to push our culinary program forward through the incredible seasonal ingredients, producers, and flavors that define the Lowcountry.”

The renovation will unfold in two phases over the coming months. Upon completion in January 2027, Planters Inn will have refreshed its guestrooms, public spaces and restaurant.
