Pittsburgh’s historic Fulton Building to join Marriott’s Autograph Collection

RLJ Lodging Trust will open The Atterbury, Autograph Collection, a 300-room hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, Penn. Scheduled to debut in summer 2026, the hotel will open following a multi-million-dollar transformation of the historic Fulton Building.

Originally constructed in 1906 by architect Grosvenor Atterbury for Carnegie Steel magnate Henry Phipps, the building sits steps from the Allegheny Riverfront, Market Square and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

“For more than a century, this building has reflected Grosvenor Atterbury’s belief that architecture should bring people, ideas, and experiences together,” said Chris Johnson, general manager of The Atterbury. “That original intent still guides us today. With The Atterbury, we are building on that foundation, creating a space that will feel distinctly Pittsburgh while giving each guest the freedom and inspiration to experience the city in a way that is entirely their own.”

Interiors were led by Christine Shanahan of HVS Design, pairing original architectural elements with color, pattern and texture. A reimagined skywell and grand rotunda anchored by an illuminated skylight, a staircase and marble interiors will serve as the hotel’s central gathering space. Guest rooms aim to reflect the building’s historic architecture through varied layouts shaped by the original structure.

The hotel will also offer an integrated art program drawing from Grosvenor Atterbury and his wife Astelle’s shared interest in the arts, featuring portraits, collages tracing the building’s history alongside Pittsburgh’s evolution and murals by local artists. Each elevator lobby will reference a defining era of the city, from its steel and riverfront roots to landmarks including Phipps Conservatory and the Gayety Theater.

The hotel’s primary dining outlet, The Drafting Room, will offer all-day contemporary American cuisine with a beverage program featuring Pennsylvania craft beer, cocktails and wine. The Fulton Room will serve as a ground-floor lounge and flexible event space. Additional meeting space will overlook the hotel’s rotunda and atrium.
