News in brief: Sheraton, 2016 outlook, Mövenpick

Sheraton slates Phuket resort: Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide signed an agreement with Grand Bay Hotel Co. to build a 200-room resort in Phuket, Thailand. The Sheraton Phuket Grand Bay Resort will open in 2019. Starwood owns 22 properties under various brands in Thailand.

 


Room rates to drive growth in ’16: Overall reservation trends in North American hotels are “positive” and expected to continue into the new year, with average daily room rates driving growth in RevPAR, according to TravelClick’s December 2015 North American Hospitality Review.

Mövenpick expands in Asia: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts announced two new properties: The 435-room Mövenpick Hotel Kota Bharu in Kelantan, Malaysia, and the Mövenpick Resort Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam, with 250 rooms, 100 residences and 100 villas. Both are slated to open in 2018. The company says it plans to open at least 15 new properties in southeast Asia by 2020.

 


Chiang Mai hotel buy: Inter Far East Energy Corp. plc purchased the Dara Dhevi Chiang Mai Hotel Group for 2.46 billion baht (US$68 million). The group includes hotel and development companies.

New management for Renaissance: Dallas, Texas-based Aimbridge Hospitality’s Caribbean division has assumed management of the 150-room Renaissance St. Croix Crambola Beach Resort & Spa in the US Virgin Islands. Aimbridge manages more than 285 hotels across multiple brands.

 


Charleston Plaza switches flags: The Charleston Plaza in North Charleston, South Carolina, will rebrand as a Marriott property. JHM Hotels, which owns the 289-room property, says a renovation will be complete by summer. Built originally as a Marriott, it was a Hilton and a Sheraton before running into financial trouble and becoming the InnPlace Hotel. JHM bought the hotel 18 months ago.

 


Dusit in Hunan Province: Dusit Fudu Hotels & Resorts signed an agreement with Zhuzhou Nature Real Estate Development Co. Ltd. to manage the new Dusit Devarana Hot Springs Resort in Zhuzhou, China. The 150-room resort, which is slated to open in late 2019, will feature villas that each have a private hot springs pool.
