New Castle JV acquires Canadian icon

Owner-operator New Castle Hotels and Resorts, Shelton, Connecticut, on Monday announced a joint venture purchase of the Algonquin Resort with Halifax-based real estate developer Southwest Properties. The luxury resort, located in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick, was purchased from the provincial government of New Brunswick, which has owned the historic hotel since 1971.

According to Guido Kerpel, vice president of Canadian New Castle Hotels, the resort will operate under its current name through the summer season of 2012 and will close in September for more than US$20 million in renovations, reopening as the Algonquin Resort under Marriott’s Autograph collection in June 2013.

Renovations will include a complete upgrade of guestrooms, new windows throughout the Tudor-style hotel, revitalized clubhouse, public spaces and a new indoor pool with a three-story slide. Moncur, a Canadian design firm renowned for its work on the Westin Nova Scotian and the Deerhurst Resort, has been engaged for the redesign.
