Landmark Hotels takes over management of Maui’s Makena resort

MAUI The Landmark Hotels Group has been appointed as the new operator and management company for Makena Beach & Golf Resort.

Landmark has a long history in Maui, having built and managed The Embassy Suites Maui as well as the former Kea Lani Hotel & Resort. Today, Landmark operates hotels and resorts in Mexico as well as in Hawaii. It is the management company for The Kahala Hotel & Resort on Oahu.

The 1,800-acre resort is now owned by a group of investors led by a subsidiary of Area Property Partners, Trinity Investments LLC and Stanford Carr Development LLC.

Shawn Sweeney, Landmark’s senior vice president of operations, will oversee the new management group at Makena. Already on site is corporate controller David Mellein director of projects Todd Sherman, both of whom have called Maui home in their career with Landmark. Glynis Esmail, vice president of sales and marketing, will oversee the sales and marketing activities of the resort.

“Makena is a very special part of Maui, and so much of the island’s early history is rooted in this area. For our Landmark team, it feels like coming home,” Sweeney says.

Landmark and the resort’s new owners are planning an extensive modernization for the 310-key property. “While this will not be an immediate refurbishment, we intend to make a guest experience difference with the resources we have,” Sweeney says. “The resort has always had a tradition of service, and the employees have gone through so much uncertainty in the past few years. We intend to work closely with the hotel’s union and to reinstitute training programs so that the Makena Beach & Golf Resort can become one of the truly great hotels in Hawaii.”
