KSL Resorts launches sustainability program

KSL Resorts has unveiled a new sustainability program, which will be rolled out in all its managed properties. While the framework and name of the new program — “On Purpose” — is new, it reinforces the sustainability efforts already practiced by the Irvine, Calif.-based group.

The new program will be implemented at 11 of KSL Resorts’ managed properties, which include Camelback Resort (Pocono Mountains, Pa.), Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach, Calif., Fairmont Grand Del Mar (San Diego, Calif.), Silverado Resort and Spa (Napa, Calif.) and Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina (San Diego, Calif.).

On Purpose builds on existing green practices followed by the full-service hospitality company by adapting and reinforcing science-based, measurable and intentional practices:

  • Carbon offsetting – The aim is to reduce energy consumption by 10% in 2023 over the previous year.
  • Single-use materials – Eliminate all single-use materials at participating resorts by the end of the year.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle – 20% waste diversion for each participating property.
  • Water usage – 5% reduction in water consumption by each participating property, with water consumption audits to be conducted companywide.
The new sustainability program will be rolled out to 11 properties, including the Vespera Resort in Pismo Beach, Calif.

“All of our properties have increasingly adapted green practices in recent years – making dramatic improvements – but we are thrilled to make it official by introducing this forward-thinking new platform,” said Ian Pullan, EVP of asset management west, who is leading the charge. “Focused on reducing KSL Resorts’ overall carbon footprint, On Purpose was carefully designed to drive positive change and reduce carbon emissions – by both guests and staff – via four core initiatives.”

Each KSL property will form or has already created an onsite sustainability committee and will identify a suitable local nature conservation partner, Pullan said.

While the official On Purpose program was only announced, all KSL Resorts locations have been working on sustainability for years. Some of these initiatives include replacing single-use in-room amenities with bigger refillable dispensers at Fairmont Grand Del Mar and Camelback Resort, elimination of plastic water bottles at Vespera Resort (an Autograph Collection resort), installation of an EDC hot water control system to lower consumption and emissions at Sheraton San Diego and the removal of irrigated planters at Vespera Resort.

KSL Resorts’ managed properties include Camelback Resort and Blue Mountain Resort – both in the Pocono Mountains, Pa.; Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach, Calif.; Silverado Resort and Spa (Napa, Calif.); Avila Lighthouse Suites (Avila Beach, Calif.); Pismo Lighthouse Suites and Shore Cliff Hotel (Pismo Beach, Calif.); Paso Robles Inn and The Piccolo (Paso Robles, Calif.); and Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Asset-managed properties include Fairmont Grand Del Mar (San Diego, Calif.); Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa (Indian Wells, Calif.); Marram (Montauk, N.Y.) and Outrigger Hotels and Resorts (Hawaii and worldwide).

In February, the company acquired the Martin Resorts Collection and added five independent boutique hotels to its management portfolio. Located along California’s Central Coast, the five properties added 346 rooms to KSL Resort’s portfolio.
