JW Marriott Tripoli remains in ‘suspended operation,’ future unknown

TRIPOLI, LIBYA The future of Marriott International’s only hotel in Libya, the 370-key JW Marriott Tripoli, remains uncertain. However, Marriott anticipates reopening the hotel at some point.

Marriott opened the 5-star hotel just seven days before rebel uprisings plunged Libya into violent chaos that continues to grip the North Africa nation. Marriott evacuated the hotel’s expatriate staff, while the Libyan staff continues to hold the hotel in a state of “suspended operation,” Ed Fuller, Marriott’s president and managing director for international lodgings, tells Arabian Business.

“The hotel is suspended; that means closed, but not closed permanently,” Fuller says. “We have staff on site.

“We all hope everything is viable in the long term. We will watch this situation carefully. I don’t have an answer to when” it will reopen, he says.
