India’s Taj Hotels opens first continental Europe hotel here

The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has opened Taj Hessischer Hof Frankfurt, restoring the former Grandhotel Hessischer Hof to the local hospitality landscape. The property closed at the end of 2020 and returns this summer as the Taj brand’s first hotel in continental Europe.

The opening adds to a portfolio already present in the U.S. market with The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York and Taj Campton Place, San Francisco. In the UK, Taj has St. James’ Court, A Taj Hotel, London and Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences, London.

The transformation combines the building’s original character with a design scheme by the Hamburg-based interior architecture studio JOI-Design, retaining parquet flooring, wood paneling and marble.

The hotel comprises 117 guestrooms and nine suites across eight categories. Seven suites exceed 80 square meters and the 140-square-metre Royal Presidential Suite includes two bedrooms, a separate meeting room and a kitchenette.

Food and beverage offerings are led by Bombay Brasserie, which seats 60 guests indoors and 45 on its terrace, under Executive Chef Nilesh Dangwal. Jimmy’s Bar has also reopened, led by Emmanuel Saridakis, who previously spent more than 22 years as bar manager of Harry’s New York Bar in Frankfurt. Additional facilities include the Lobby Lounge & Bar, J Wellness Circle, three event spaces, two private dining rooms and The Chambers, a members-only club.

The hotel is led by General Manager Albert Mayr, alongside Hotel Manager Tanika Taneja.

“Our goal is to combine European elegance with the warmth of Indian hospitality to create a truly exceptional guest experience,” said Albert. “We also want to establish Bombay Brasserie as a leading culinary destination and re-establish Jimmy’s Bar as one of Frankfurt’s premier social venues.”

The opening follows the promotion of Spiridon Sarantopoulos to Senior Vice President – Operations, Europe and USA, IHCL.

“Our collection of landmark hotels represents some of the world’s most celebrated destinations, each with its own unique heritage and identity,” said Spiridon Sarantopoulos. “As we continue to grow across London, Frankfurt, New York, and San Francisco, our commitment remains unchanged – to deliver exceptional hospitality, inspire our teams, strengthen guest loyalty, and create memorable experiences that are deeply authentic to each destination while remaining unmistakably Taj.”
