Hyatt Hotels to build Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO A Hyatt Hotels Corp. affiliate has acquired a majority interest in a 46,000-sq.-m oceanfront property in Barra da Tijuca, an upscale residential and commercial district of Rio de Janeiro, with plans to develop a 408-key Grand Hyatt.

Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro will feature two full-service restaurants, a lounge bar, a pool bar, a patisserie, a fitness center and spa, a 900-sq.-mr grand ballroom and 1,300 sq. m of additional space.

“Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro will be a terrific addition to the collection of 36 spectacular Grand Hyatt hotels around the world today and will be a strong complement to the 470-room Grand Hyatt in São Paulo,” says Myles McGourty, senior vice president of Latin America for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts.

Expanding Hyatt’s presence in Brazil is a critical component of the company’s international growth strategy, says Pat McCudden, senior vice president of real estate and development in Latin America, Caribbean and Mexico. “The development of Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro represents a significant opportunity to further Hyatt’s goal of becoming the most preferred brand in all the segments we serve by expanding in locations where Hyatt brands are not represented or are underrepresented.”

In addition to Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro, 10 other Grand Hyatt properties are under development around the world. Hyatt’s portfolio in Latin America includes hotels in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.
