HOTELS Holiday Spirit: World’s longest Yule log cake

The pastry chefs at Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai recently broke the Guinness World Record for the longest Yule log cake, which had stood at 681.8 feet (207.8 meters), by creating a cake 3,504 feet (1,068 meters) long.

A cake 1,068 meters long was chosen for the record-breaking confection because the numbers 6 and 8 in Chinese represent fortune, good luck and prosperity. The cake started at the hotel’s Grand Tower lobby and crossed the length of the River Wing lobby by going up and down stairs. Ingredients included 904 organic eggs, 2,304 pounds (1,045 kilograms) of wheat flour and 836 pounds (379 kilograms) of icing sugar, and 150 staff members worked with 80 chefs for 24 hours to prepare and set up the cake.

The cake ultimately was sold to the public, and all proceeds will be donated to support children from Shanghai Children’s Hospital of Fudan University who need chemotherapy.
