The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. and Sekisui House, Ltd. have officially opened The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, which they are billing as Japan’s first “urban resort.”
The property, the fourth Ritz-Carlton in Japan, is located on the banks of the Kamogawa River in Nijho Ohashi.
The 134 guestrooms and suites overlook the river and the Higashiyama Mountains. The architects and designers set out to give the building the structure and aesthetic of a traditional Meiji house and courtyard, with interiors by Peter Remedios and Spin Studios incorporating patterned motifs by local artisans, Zen rock gardens, and water features. Some suites offer “moon deck” gardens and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Mizuki, the Japanese restaurant, serves a menu of sushi, tempura, teppanyaki and kaiseki options in a setting with a stone garden, waterfall, and outdoor terrace with firepits. La Locanda offers Italian fare with a walk-in charcuterie and cheese cellar; the private room, called Ebisugawatei, is a preserved and historically listed building. Pierre Hermé Paris will have an exclusive range of signature desserts at the Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto.
The Ritz-Carlton Spa, located at the foot of a four-story waterfall, has seven treatment rooms and offers services inspired by Japanese culture. Four event rooms are named after types of cherry blossoms; the resort will also have a wedding showroom.
