Hot Openings: Indigo readies for Hong Kong debut

Hotel Indigo Hong Kong is set to open in the Wan Chai neighborhood this month after five years of planning.

The 29-story building is wrapped in a gold dragon motif, which also functions as an “eco-screen” to counteract hot spots and solar gain.

Architecture firm Aedas International Ltd. is responsible for the design, which incorporates elements of local history and culture. The dragon image is reinforced by burnished bronze solar fins and the hotel’s orientation, which uses the shade from neighboring buildings to create patterns of sunlight and shadow.

If the building is a dragon, the rooftop glass-bottomed, cantilevered, infinity pool is the pearl often associated with dragons in mythology. The Skybar, also located on the roof and designed by HBA Design Consultants, serves beverages and snacks.

The property’s 138 guestrooms and suites are designed to reflect the Wan Chai neighborhood. Some rooms feature hand-made mosaic walls showing local landmarks, butterflies and dragons, while others have locally made statues of kung fu master Lam Jo, who is originally from Wan Chai.

The second-floor Café Post offers all-day dining in a cozy atmosphere, with a terrace opposite the Old Wan Chai Post Office. The hotel includes a modern interpretation of a Chinese tea house with a sunken garden as well as a 24-hour gym, meeting facilities, and a comfortable, modern library.

Tai Hung Fai Enterprise Co. LTD owns Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island, where Bryan Gabriel serves as general manager.
