Hot Openings: Brand makes Japan debut

Hyatt’s Andaz brand has opened the Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills. The 164-key property is the brand’s first in Japan. The hotel occupies floors 47 to 54 in the multi-use Toranomon Hills Tower.

New York-based interior designer Tony Chi and Tokyo’s Shinichiro Ogata used the natural materials often found in Japanese design as their starting point. Tables in the guestrooms and lounges look like unhewn pieces of wood — albeit with a glossy urban polish. An elaborate flower sculpture on one wall of the elevator looks like washi paper (a Japanese paper made from tree bark).

For the restaurants, the designers melded local and global influences. The Andaz Tavern, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, keeps the screens and delicate geometric elements of Japanese design, but bold red chairs and metallic sculptures by U.K. artist Charlie Whinney give it a cosmopolitan vibe. The rooftop bar is a contemporary spin on the iconic Katsura Imperial Villa (a palace in Kyoto). Varying ceiling heights in each of three separate zones allow for the creation of a different atmosphere in each area within the teahouse-inspired venue.
