Hilton continues to grow in Canada, aims to increase portfolio by 50%

Hilton has been focusing on Canada and accelerating its multi brand, multi destination expansion strategy across the country. The previous year saw the accommodation company widen its footprint in Canada and ended 2023 with 180 open hotels totaling more than 28,000 rooms across 11 brands. In 2023, Hilton opened 10 new hotels, with Canopy by Hilton opening its inaugural hotel in the country.

Looking to maintain the pace of its growth this year, Hilton aims to exceed the 200 hotel mark in Canada and plans to increase its portfolio by more than 50% in the next few years. With around 20 deals signed in 2023, Hilton’s Canada pipeline comprises roughly 90 hotels and over 11,000 rooms. This year, the company will introduce Spark by Hilton and Motto by Hilton brands in the country.

The continued growth momentum is a result of an organic, multi-brand, country-wide growth strategy, Jeff Cury, senior director of development, Canada, Hilton said.

Hilton is focused on opening properties in every province, with both existing as well as new-to-market brands and growing options for business as leisure travelers, Cury added.

Hilton’s Canadian portfolio currently consists of more than 180 properties totaling over 28,000 rooms under 11 brands in nearly 90 cities, 10 provinces and three territories. The company has multi-brand presence from Vancouver and Montreal to Quebec, Toronto and Winnipeg.

LIFESTYLE BRANDS

The Canopy by Hilton ventured into Canada in 2023 with the opening of Canopy by Hilton Toronto-Yorkville. Hilton signed five other agreements, including Motto by Hilton Montreal Downtown, which marks the first Motto by Hilton property in the country.

When it opens later this year, Revery Toronto Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton will be the second hotel under the Curio Collection in Canada.

Hilton is aiming to triple its portfolio in the lifestyle segment in the next five years, with new properties slated to open in key destinations such as Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Niagara Falls, etc.

SPARK BY HILTON’S ENTRY

Hilton signed six new deals in 2023 for its premium brand, Spark by Hilton. This year, the brand has four openings – Spark by Hilton Toronto Markham; Spark by Hilton Oshawa; Spark by Hilton Woodstock and Spark by Hilton Owen Sound.

FOCUSED-SERVICE BRANDS

Focused-service brands continue to propel the company’s overall growth in Canada, accounting for over 60% of Hilton’s pipeline in the country. The previous year saw Hilton adding five focused-service brands to its Canadian collection – Tru by Hilton Toronto Airport West and four properties under the Hampton by Hilton flag in downtown Toronto, Hamilton, Cornwall and Midland.

Tru has been growing its presence and is anticipated to grow from three properties to over 15. With 70 open hotels and more than 25 in design or under construction, Hampton is looking to achieve its 100th property milestone in the next five years.

EXTENDED STAY

At present, Hilton has more than 30 extended stay hotels across Canada, with 20 more in the pipeline. This segment’s growth is led by Home2 Suites by Hilton, which has been rapidly expanding its portfolio in the country.

In 2023, Hilton opened Home2 Suites by Hilton Huntsville, Home2 Suites by Hilton Quebec City, QC and Home2 Suites by Hilton Thunder Bay and signed five additional deals. This year, the brand has two openings – Home2 Suites by Hilton Kingston and Home2 Suites by Hilton Kitchener.

FULL-SERVICE BRANDS

Hilton’s full-service category in Canada is primarily driven by its DoubleTree by Hilton brand. DoubleTree by Hilton currently has more than 20 hotels in operation and over seven in the pipeline.

Last year, Hilton signed DoubleTree by Hilton Brome Missisquoi Resort in Quebec. This year, DoubleTree by Hilton Kingston and DoubleTree by Hilton West Kelowna are scheduled to open their doors, growing the brand’s footprint in Ontario and British Columbia.
