Canada’s hospitality sector has shown resilience and recovery with a slight note of warning on bottom-line conversion. Amid challenges to the sector worldwide, the country’s hotel market has remained strong, with TRevPAR taking center stage, according to the latest data on the Canadian market by HotStats.
In a comparative study between 2019 and 2023, the trends underscore the transient character of the setbacks faced in 2022 and the industry’s subsequent rebound.
TRevPAR declined in 2022 relative to 2019. It, however, bounced back this year, with the metric not only recovering but also breaching previous years’ levels. This highlights a strong return of consumer confidence and spending in the hospitality sector.

CONCERNS FOR THE SECTOR
However, there are warning signs for the sector as the Gross Operating Profit Margin in year-to-date 2023 fell 0.5 percentage points compared to the same period in 2022.
This means hotel owners are working harder to convert top-line revenue increases to bottom-line gains since marginal revenue increases should have a positive impact on bottom-line conversion.
In fact, the $65.11 rise in TRevPAR YTD 2023 from the same period last year delivers only $21.77 of GOP or a margin of 33.4%. This results in a decline in the GOP margin, which, although suffering only a slight percentage point decline, should have posted a significant increase given the marginal revenue uplift.
For the rest of the year, hoteliers will have to keep a close eye on market trends, leverage cost benchmarking data and implement more data-driven strategies to navigate the evolving scenario to deliver the highly prized bottom-line conversion that top-line increases should be capable of yielding.
