Arena, convention center expansion, hotel proposed for Baltimore Sheraton site

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND A Baltimore civic organization is proposing a US$900 million project to be built on the site of Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel that would include an arena, a convention center and a new hotel.

The proposal from the Greater Baltimore Committee centers on a privately financed 18,500-seat arena that would be topped by a 500-key hotel, and both would be attached to an expanded Baltimore Convention Center. The arena and hotel component, which is estimated to cost US$500 million, would replace the existing 337-key Sheraton and would be privately financed.

The entire project is dependent on being attached to a doubled convention center, but that component is contingent on securing some US$400 million in bonds from Maryland. Governor Martin O’Malley calls the proposal “exciting,” but whether the bond measure will ultimately pass remains to be seen.
