$1 billion Real Madrid theme park resort planned for UAE

Spain’s popular Real Madrid football team is set to have an island theme park and resort dedicated to it in the United Arab Emirates.

The investment fund Rak Marjan Island Football, Luxembourg, and Ras al-Khaimah ruler Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr al Qasimi are investing US$1 billion in the Real Madrid Island Resort project, which is set to open in January 2015.

The 12-hectare (29.6-acre) island theme park will offer attendees a roller coaster set over the sea, virtual football with holograms, a football-themed museum and a 10,000-capacity stadium for real football matches. It will also include a 450-room 5-star hotel and a residential area with 400 apartments and 48 villas.
