Wyoming’s landmark Hitching Post Inn badly damaged by fire

CHEYENNE, WYOMING A large fire has left the historic Hitching Post Inn and Conference Center in Wyoming’s capital of Cheyenne badly damaged.

Flames 20 ft. high burned through the roof of the 176-key property, authorities say, leaving much of the hotel and its conference center charred. No injuries were reported.

The 83-year-old hotel has been closed for about a year due to financial troubles, but it was in the midst of a renovation that would have seen it reopen within weeks. For many decades it was the premier hotel in Wyoming’s capital city, serving as the lodging of choice for legislators and U.S. presidents.

The property is owned by CJM Hospitality, which has not yet announced what will become of the hotel. However, Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen tells The Associated Press that the property is “a total loss.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
