What’s Hot: Kempinski renovates Budapest property

Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest has unveiled newly transformed public areas in the property’s first major refurbishment since its 1992 opening.

MKV Design led the project.

The lobby has a dramatic new atmosphere, with over-clad columns that now have a sculptural look. Several new elements, such as the marble flooring, the shaping of the walls and a circular seating area, echo the circular glazed ceiling. Glass and mirrored panels give guests glimpses of the rest of the ground floor. Reception consists of four padded leather desks; the two additional desks can slide into the timber wall treatment when they are not needed.

The project replaced the staircase that leads to first-floor function and meeting rooms. The new staircase, a modern interpretation of a classic grand staircase, curves around the edge of the lobby. The staircase is made of brown stone with a perforated metal balustrade.

Blue Fox, the ground-floor bar, has its own street entrance. The ambience is intimate and club-like, with a dark walnut floor and low, discreet lighting. The blue acrylic bar surround is inset with mesh.

The Living Room has sofas and high-back armchairs in a reinterpretation of Budapest’s coffeehouse scene. The space offers a fireplace and a new patisserie counter with backlit colored glass.

The restaurant is now called ÉS Bisztró, combining a farmhouse kitchen and an urban restaurant for an informal dining experience. The timber floor has modern tessellated tiles for buffet areas, while white tiles hang on the walls. The restaurant is able to be used as one large space, ideal for breakfast, and as three smaller areas for times that are less busy.

The Promenade, formerly a walkway, now serves as a lounge. The space has a glazed roof and inset mosaic “rugs” that define seating areas. The space has tan leather sofas, walnut panelling and bronze tables.
