Radisson transforms 1960s building into new luxury hotel in Milan

Adding to its luxury lifestyle portfolio in Italy, Radisson Hotel Group announced the opening of the Radisson Collection Hotel, Santa Sofia Milan. Located in the heart of the city, Radisson Collection Hotel Santa Sofia Milan is situated halfway between Piazza del Duomo and the famed Navigli canal district.

This marks Radisson’s fifth luxury lifestyle hotel in Italy and the second in Milan.

The hotel earlier functioned as the landmark headquarters of Allianz Italia from the 1960s. The building was transformed into the luxury Radisson hotel over four years by architects Studio Marco Piva. The hotel aims to achieve a LEED-level gold certification.

The ancient Venetian trachyte façade has been preserved, and new external lighting was added. The original roof of the building, with its oxidized-copper pitches, stands out from the Milanese cityscape.

“Radisson Collection Hotel, Santa Sofia Milan is the perfect fifth Italian iteration of our Radisson Collection brand, and our second in Milan, as we continue expanding our portfolio of luxury hotels. As Radisson Hotel Group, we’re looking to give guests more options in Italy across different hotel brands, with 30 hotels by 2027 as an ambitious, but very much achievable target,” said Chema Basterrechea, global president and COO at Radisson Hotel Group.

The hotel offers 159 rooms and suites designed by Studio Marco Piva as small urban lofts with big windows and interior glass to maximize natural light. In-room amenities include care products by Culti Milano, Nespresso coffee machines and bathrobes. Milanese designers AtelierP and Alessandro Cesario created the hotel’s interior public spaces.

Located in the building’s former courtyard, the all-day dining restaurant, Sofia Kitchen & Bar, offers a mix of Mediterranean, international and European dishes and Milanese cocktails.

The hotel’s seventh floor houses the ISSEI Rooftop, a fine dining restaurant and bar specializing in Nikkei cuisine, a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisines. Designed by AtelierP, the space will open in the coming weeks.

On the fourth level, a new terrace with an outdoor swimming pool and lounge bar area has been built, which will be open during the warmer months. The hotel also offers a 24-hour fitness center and a sauna during the day and evening.

Radisson Collection hotels across Italy include Radisson Collection Hotel, Palazzo Nani Venice; Radisson Collection Hotel, Palazzo Touring Club Milan; Grand Hotel Savoia Cortina d’Ampezzo, a Radisson Collection Hotel; and Palazzo Montemartini Rome, A Radisson Collection Hotel.

Along with the Santa Sofia Milan, Radisson Collection has more openings planned this year, including Radisson Collection Astorija Hotel, Vilnius, Radisson Collection Resort, Galle in Sri Lanka and Cour des Loges Lyon, A Radisson Collection Hotel. In 2022, Radisson furthered its ambitious expansion strategy to become one of the top three hotel groups worldwide with a portfolio of nine brands and its expanding resorts portfolio.
