News in brief: Mandarin Oriental, Wyndham

Mandarin Oriental: Mandarin Oriental International is reviewing its options for the Excelsior, a hotel in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay, according to a filing with the Singapore stock exchange, and is considering a possible sale, the Financial Times reported.

 


Sofitel: Sofitel announced a development deal with partner MKM Commercial Holdings that would be the largest of the hotel company’s properties in the Middle East: Sofitel Dubai Wafi, with 501 rooms, will open in late 2019 in Dubai. 

 


Wyndham, Caesars partner: Wyndham Hotel Group and Caesars Entertainment created a partnership for loyalty program members. Members of both programs get a complimentary status match, including booking rooms, earning and redeeming points, and transferring points between the programs.

Resorts World: Resorts World Manila management said it is giving PHP1 million (US$20,146.30) worth of financial assistance for families of the victims of an attack last week at the hotel casino that killed 37 people. The gunman, who died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot, was identified as Jessie Carlos Javier, 42, who police said had a gambling problem and was in debt. 

 


‘Modest’ growth for U.S.: STR and Tourism Economics are projecting that the U.S. hotel industry will report continued modest growth through 2018, citing an uncertain political and economic climate. For total-year 2017, the U.S. hotel industry is predicted to report a 0.3% decrease in occupancy to 65.3%, a 2.5% rise in ADR to US$127.13 and a 2.2% increase in RevPAR to US$82.98.For 2018, STR and Tourism Economics project a 0.2% decrease in occupancy to 65.1% but increases in ADR (+2.7% to US$130.59) and RevPAR (+2.5% to US$85.07).

 


AccorHotels: AccorHotels appointed Mark Purcell vice president of development for North America, based in New York. Previously, Purcell was Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ vice president, development, and also worked at Interstate Hotels & Resorts. 

 


 

Kimpton: Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants named Allison Reid chief development officer. Most recently, Reid was senior vice president of North America development for Starwood Hotels & Resorts, overseeing development and acquisition efforts for 11 of its brands in North America, the Caribbean and French Polynesia.
