News in brief: Hotel Chelsea, Mélia, Omaha

Hotel Chelsea ownership: BD Hotels’ joint venture partner in the US$250 million purchase of New York City’s Hotel Chelsea has been revealed: It’s frequent collaborator Sean MacPherson, and the ownership entity is called SIR Chelsea LLC. The group will redevelop the famous hotel as a hotel and condominiums and expects it to reopen in 2018.

Mélia in Cabo: Mélia Hotels International is renaming its Mélia Cabo Real to Paradisus Los Cabos and giving it a US$35 million renovation. The property, the fourth Paradisus in Mexico, is scheduled to open in December.

 


Renovation in Omaha: Leslie Hospitality of Omaha, Nebraska, and Century Omaha Land Co. of Rapid City, South Dakota, bought a Ramada Plaza Hotel, a convention center and the CoCo Key Water Resort and plan to invest US$40 million in a renovation that would create a new hotel and make other investments.

Decline in bookings: The pace of new bookings in major North American markets declined 2.2% and the pace of new group business bookings is down 8.5% over last year, according to TravelClick’s October North American Hospitality Review. ADR and RevPAR are both up slightly.
