Meliá Hotels expands luxury portfolio globally

Meliá Hotels International is growing its luxury footprint globally. One in three of the Spanish hotel group’s openings will be within its luxury portfolio, spanning across Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and Mexico.

In the summer of 2023, the group added Tanzania to its collection with the opening of the Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection and debuted its Paradisus by Meliá brand in Europe with the openings in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Continuing this expansion strategy, Meliá is set to open luxury hotels across the world, which includes Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá in Milan, ME by Meliá properties in Lisbon and Malta, and ZEL, a new lifestyle brand and joint venture with tennis legend Rafael Nadal.

GRAN MELIÁ

The expansion of the Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts has helped Meliá reinforce its position in the luxury sector. The brand will continue its growth in Europe and Southeast Asia with properties in Albania, Spain, Italy, and Vietnam.

Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá is expected to open later this month in Milan. The hotel is housed in the 19th-century Palazzo Venezia, the former headquarters of Assicurazioni Generali. The hotel includes a patisserie, bistro, cocktail bar, rooftop bar and a terrace.

Gran Meliá will add its presence in Spain with Torre Melina, a Gran Meliá Hotel in Barcelona.

The brand will be making its debut in Vietnam and entering Southeast Asia with the opening of the Gran Meliá Nha Trang. The all-villa property will be located on Fairy Mountain with views of Turtle Island.

ME BY MELIÁ

ME by Meliá is set to open properties in Mexico, Malta and Lisbon.

Located in the heart of Lisbon, ME Lisbon will open in 2024 and showcase the brand’s signature avant-garde design and gastronomic concepts, like a Radio Rooftop Bar and more than 6,450 square feet of meeting space.

Scheduled to open in 2024, ME Malta is located in the coastal town of St Julian’s. The hotel has been designed by architect Zaha Hadid and features 140 rooms and suites, dining options and the signature Radio Rooftop Bar.

Located in Playa de Carricitos, Mexico, ME Sayulita will offer 125 rooms and villas, three restaurants, a pool, spa and a rooftop bar with a pool and beach club. This will be the third luxury lifestyle hotel in Mexico, joining ME Cabo and the future ME Guadalajara.

ADDITION IN TANZANIA

Meliá grew its African portfolio with the opening of the Ngorongoro Lodge Meliá Collection in July. This is the fourth property in Meliá’s collection of properties in Tanzania.

Located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for housing the world’s largest volcanic crater, the 56-room lodge aims to preserve and protect the natural ecosystem and culture of the local Massai tribe.

DEBUTS IN EUROPE

The all-inclusive Paradisus by Meliá brand launched its Destination Inclusive concept in Europe, with openings in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Opened earlier this year, Paradisus Gran Canaria is situated in San Augustin Beach and blends luxury with local culture and nature.

The newly opened Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote has been designed by Spanish architect Fernando Higueras. Surrounded by the beaches of Costa Teguise and villages, the hotel offers a biosphere reserve with lunar landscapes, volcanoes, villages and volcanoes.

Other significant openings for Meliá include those from ZEL, the new lifestyle brand created in partnership with Rafael Nadal. Inspired by the homes, outdoor culture and lifestyle of the Mediterranean, ZEL opened its inaugural hotel in Mallorca this summer and will continue its expansion with ZEL Sayulita in Mexico, which is slated to open in 2025.
