Mantra launches video job applications

Australia-based Mantra Group launched video job applications through its online MyCareer recruitment platform. Applicants are encouraged to create a 60-second video “cover letter,” introducing themselves to the recruitment team as well as answering several questions about their experience.

“We’re not looking for production quality. We’re trying to get to know the applicant on a deeper level so we can more easily identify candidates who embody our company values,” said Cherie McGill, executive director of human resources at Mantra. “We are very excited about this new recruitment tool as it gives our team a greater personal understanding of applicants.”

The first Mantra property to use the video recruitment is the Peppers Kings Square Hotel opening in October in Perth, Australia. The hotel is accepting video applications for guest service agent roles.

Cherie offered several tips to creating a “standout” video application:

Keep it short and simple

Similar to a traditional cover letter, a video cover letter should be clear, concise and grab the attention of the recruiter.

Engage your audience

Mantra is looking for team members who are able to engage with their guests and create a “unique service experience.” This ability should be communicated through the video.

Choose your message

Similar to an interview or phone conversation, use words and phrases found in the job description and your resume to highlight why you’re a good fit.

Don’t over think it

The recruiter simply wants to hear about the applicant and what could be brought to the Mantra team.

Find your hook and close it

Identify the “hook” that will grab the recruiting team’s attention and conclude with a statement of gratitude, such as “thank you for your time.”
