LV Sands wants €15b ‘Euro-Vegas’ development in Barcelona or Madrid

LAS VEGAS Sheldon Adelson is in talks with officials from Barcelona and Madrid about his vision for a so-called “Euro-Vegas,” which would feature a massive Las Vegas Strip-style gaming resort that could cost upwards of €15 billion to build.

Adelson, CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., says the project could have 20,000 hotel guestrooms, millions of square feet of retail and convention space and create 180,000 jobs. Adelson plans to meet with contractors in two weeks and is assembling a team of architects and builders that would construct several resorts at once.

“I want to do a mini-Las Vegas in Europe,” Adelson says. “I hope we can use the name Europe Vegas or Euro-Vegas.

“We’re very seriously considering this, we’re very actively pursuing this. There’s no reason why we can’t do it.”

He made the comments during a press conference in Singapore, where Sands last year opened the US$5.7 billion Marina Bay Sands integrated resort. Adelson says Sands is seeking more land from Singapore to enlarge the casino’s convention space because demand has been much higher than expected.
