Hot Openings: Restored hotel opens in L.A.’s Koreatown

The Hotel Normandie is open in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles after a restoration.

Architects Walker and Eisen originally constructed the 94-key hotel in the 1920s.

“When we bought the hotel, it was our goal to authentically restore it to provide guests with a unique experience that they won’t be able to duplicate anywhere else in the city,” says Owner/Partner Jingbo Lou, who is also a preservation architect. “We studied the original hotel as it was designed by Walker and Eisen, and then did our best to return the hotel to its original glory.”

The Renaissance Revival-style exterior features a neon rooftop sign and brick façade; restaurant and nightlife options will debut at street level this spring and summer.
Each floor is decorated with photography from Jody Miller, a local historian and photographer. Guestrooms have restored hardwood floors and Art Deco-style bathrooms as well as modern technology. The first phase of the project has been completed, with 74 guestrooms and suites open. The final 20 will debut this summer.

Broughton Hotels manages the Hotel Normandie, which is privately owned by three principals, including Lou.

“Koreatown is experiencing an exciting rebirth,” says Broughton Hotels Founder/CEO Larry Broughton. “It is once again one of Los Angeles’ most notable and inspiring neighborhoods, complete with diverse culture and new restaurants, boutiques, nightlife and more. For the urban explorers looking for an authentic Los Angeles experience, staying at Hotel Normandie will put you right in the center of it all.”
