Galaxy Macau to add 2 new hotels

Galaxy Macau is set to undergo a US$2 billion property expansion, which will include new Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott branded hotels.

The addition will bring the Cotai Strip property’s total guestrooms to 3,600 and both of the two new hotels will include spas. The JW Marriott Macau will have 1,100 guestrooms and The Ritz-Carlton Macau will have 250 guestrooms. The targeted opening date of the new hotels is 2015 and construction has already begun.

The expansion will bring the property’s retail space to over 100,000 sq m (1 million sq ft), adding space for 160 more stores to bring the total capacity to 200 stores. It will also add MICE space for up to 2,000 additional guests, bringing the total MICE capacity to 3,000 guests.

Galaxy’s announcement comes as development in Macau has followed the lead of Las Vegas in investing in MICE space to make the destination less gaming-centered even though gaming revenue there has continued to skyrocket, up 24% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012.
