Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Toronto, announced on Wednesday plans to open its first hotel in Russia in 2017, the Fairmont Pekin Moscow.
Real estate development company HALS-Development, Moscow, is developing the project.
The historic 236-room Pekin Hotel, which opened in 1955 and was designed by leading figure of Stalinist architecture Dmitry Chechulin, is set to close for renovations until then. Architectural details including the façade and internal spaces will be restored and extended to some other parts of the building and Chinese motifs found in parts of the hotel will be emphasized.
“The project not only affords us the opportunity to offer our guests a new, key destination in the largest country in the world but allows us to partner with HALS-Development, which in addition to being a highly-regarded property developer who shares our sensibility for heritage and preservation,” said Chris Cahill, Fairmont president.
Other destinations in the former Soviet Union that are in the Fairmont pipeline include Kiev, Ukraine and Baku, Azerbaijan.
