December was a month full of big moves, be they on the development or people end. Choice Hotels International jumped on a US$231 million deal to acquire the brand and franchise business of WoodSpring Suites from WoodSpring Hotels Holdings, a portfolio company of Lindsay Goldberg.

Karim Alibhai, principal of Miami-based Gencom, moved to acquire 1,400 acres on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast last year: HOTELS spoke with Alibhai about his motivation behind that move. In hiring news, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group promoted Christoph Mares to chief operating officer and Mövenpick appointed Mark Willis as president – Asia. Finally, while people driven videos are a sure bet to bring the guests in, hotels don’t always nail it when it comes to one of the most basic hospitality principles out there: service.
