China has proposed standards for hormone residue limits in beef as it expands access to imports of U.S. product, according to a report by Reuters.
Maximum residue limits for Zeranol and Trenbolone in beef muscle are 2 micrograms per kilogram, and for Melengestrol Acetate it is 1 micogram. The proposed limits didn’t cover beef offal, Reuters reported.
China has had a zero-tolerance policy on growth hormones in beef. Beijing agreed in a phase one deal with the U.S. to establish residue limits for three hormones used in beef production to help expand access to U.S. product.
Also as part of that deal, China last month conditionally lifted a ban on beef from U.S. cattle older than 30 months of age.
