At the end of 2011, 61% of the hotel supply in the Dutch market was chain affiliated, which is considerably higher than the European average, according to research by Horwath HTL. Moreover, compared to the chain rate of 35% some 10 years ago it means an extraordinary fast advance of hotel chains.
No less than 50 hotel chains with 63 hotel brands are active in the Netherlands, totaling almost 560 hotels and more than 57,800 hotel rooms. Of all hotel chains, Van der Valk Hotels en Restaurants, the oldest Dutch hotel chain, has the largest market share by far. NH Hoteles also has a leading position in the Dutch hotel market.
The Dutch chain hotel market still has a reasonably national character. The 30 hotel chains with a national origin have 23 brands, which are all present in the Netherlands. The 20 global companies present in the Netherlands only have 40 of their 105 brands present and most hotels are strictly managed by the global chains.
