Capella Kyoto opens marking first for brand in Japan

Capella Kyoto has opened in the Miyagawa-cho kagai district. Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates and Singapore-based Brewin Design Office, the 89-room property is Capella Hotels and Resorts’ first hotel in Japan. The hotel is located near Kenninji temple and the Kamo river, steps from where kabuki originated.

The hotel is part of a three-part development along Shinmichi Street, built on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School. The development includes the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre and a new community center.

Accommodations range from Deluxe City Rooms to the 206-square-meter top-floor Capella Suite. The property includes Premier Theatre Rooms, two Gion Suites with views of Kenninji temple and six Onsen Suites with private hot spring baths.

Capella Kyoto’s dining venues include SoNoMa by SingleThread, a partnership with the three-Michelin-starred SingleThread restaurant in Sonoma, Calif., helmed by Chef Keita Tominaga. The property also features Yoi, a late-night kappo dining destination; Lanterne, an all-day French brasserie and SingleThread Entremets, a patisserie program led by Executive Pastry Chef Emma Horowitz and Chef Miu Morita.

Wellness facilities are available through Auriga Spa, which includes three private onsen rooms, wet and dry saunas, four treatment rooms and a fitness center.

“Kyoto is one of the world’s greatest cradles of craft, ritual and tradition and Capella Kyoto has been conceived to honour that legacy in full,” said Clive Edwards, senior vice president of Capella Hotels and Resorts. “Japan has long been a destination we have deeply admired and we have been intentional about introducing our brands here. Building on the success of Patina Osaka, which opened last year, we look forward to welcoming guests to Capella Kyoto as the next chapter in that journey — and the beginning of a deeper story in Japan. Every detail—from the unseen artistry embedded in the architecture to the most personal moments of service—reflects our belief that true luxury is the feeling of being deeply cared for and being profoundly connected to a place and its living culture. Together, our properties are a heartfelt expression of Japanese culture that’s shaped by a genuine embrace of its traditions, people and spirit.”

The hotel’s cultural programming, Capella Curates, includes access to performances at the Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, a private ochaya encounter, a visit to a 150-year-old sandal atelier and a kintsugi workshop.

Capella Kyoto is accepting bookings from March 22, 2026. The opening package, “Whispers of Gion,” includes breakfast for two at Lanterne, a hotel credit of JPY 10,000 for Deluxe and Premium Rooms or JPY 20,000 for Junior Suite, Onsen Suite, Gion Suite and Capella Suite per stay and a curated gift.
