1 Hotels to venture into Japan with nature-inspired Tokyo hotel

SH Hotels & Resorts, the sustainable hotel brand management company, has unveiled plans to open 1 Hotel Tokyo, marking the brand’s debut in Japan. SH Hotels is collaborating with its long-term partner Mori Trust for the hotel.

Scheduled to welcome guests from 2025, the 211-room 1 Hotel Tokyo will be located in the Akasaka district, serving as a centerpiece of Mori Trust’s Tokyo World Gate Akasaka project. The complex includes retail venues and offices in a pedestrian-friendly development.

“Tokyo World Gate Akasaka is a development project with a vision to create a lush, green oasis in the heart of Tokyo,” said Miwako Date, president and CEO of Mori Trust. “With its deep commitment to nature reflected in every aspect — from design to service — 1 Hotels embodies the future of luxury hospitality. We feel it is the perfect flagship choice for Tokyo World Gate Akasaka.”

In keeping with its commitment to sustainability, 1 Hotel Tokyo has achieved the Rank S certification from CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency), signifying the highest level of environmental performance. Key initiatives include reduced energy and water consumption, advanced rainwater and greywater recycling systems, and the sustainable sourcing of furniture, fixtures and equipment from reclaimed and recycled materials.

SH Hotels’ pledge to sustainability is woven into the 1 Hotel Tokyo fabric, reflecting in the property’s water and energy conservation systems to the use of reclaimed materials, said Raul Leal, CEO of SH Hotels & Resorts, adding that the hotel has a biophilic design and focuses on wellness and nature-inspired, community-minded experiences.

The hotel’s design has been inspired from traditional craftsmanship and Japan’s natural landscapes, embracing the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. The main lobby on the 38th floor has a sculptural stone water feature and a ceiling that mimics the sand patterns of a Zen garden.

The hotel has a main restaurant that can be accessed from the 38th floor lobby and has an open kitchen, several private dining areas along with views of the Imperial Palace.

Guests can access a spa inspired by Zen gardens, multiple hammams, a fitness center, an indoor pool and an outdoor terrace space. The hotel will also offer 473 square meters of meeting and event space.

1 Hotels is a luxury lifestyle hotel brand inspired by nature. Since opening its first hotel in 2015 in Miami’s South Beach and Manhattan’s Central Park, the brand has grown its global presence and has properties under development in Austin, Cabo San Lucas, Paris, Copenhagen, Elounda Hills (Crete), Riyadh, Melbourne, Seattle, Tokyo and San Miguel de Allende.
