What’s Hot: Iconic athlete’s steakhouse combines past and present

Michael Jordan’s Steak House Chicago at the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile aims to blend the atmosphere of a modern upscale restaurant with the historic elements of the hotel, which was built in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club.

Designed by Michael Dalton, vice president of design for Strategic Hotels & Resorts, the restaurant’s highlights include an arrival rotunda with a painted ceiling two stories above, carved stone columns, marble staircases, walnut flooring, leather seating, blown glass lighting, a glass footbridge into the main dining room and subtle references to Michael Jordan throughout the décor.

Under the leadership of Executive Chef James O’Donnell and General Manager Myron Markewycz, the restaurant serves dry-aged steaks, seafood and other upscale comfort food. Occupying the hotel’s second-floor dining room and first-floor lobby bar, it boasts 6,300 sq ft (585 sq m) of space, with seating in the dining room for 160, 90 in the bar and 36 in two private dining spaces.

In the restaurant’s dining room, tones of cognac, basalt, bronze and crimson provide a sturdy palette against platinum-tinted walls that frame views of Michigan Avenue below.
