Super Bowl boosts hotel rates up to 1,700%

Hotel rates in and around the city of Indianapolis, site of the Super Bowl on February 5, are soaring, in some cases more than 1,700% above normal prices, according to a survey from Cheaphotels.org.

At the America’s Best Value Inn in the East Indianapolis neighborhood, a room that regularly goes for US$66 per night has been jacked up to US$990 Super Bowl weekend — a 1,400% cost increase.

The Knights Inn Indianapolis near the airport is boasting an even bigger increase — 1,758% — charging US$725 to spend the night over Super Bowl weekend instead of its normal US$39.

Long commutes from Lucas Oil Stadium, where the game will be played, are the only way fans will score more reasonable rates. In Greenwood, about 13.2 miles (21.2 kilometers) from the center of Indianapolis, a 2-star hotel room can be had for US$400. The town of Martinsville, about 30 miles (48.3 kilometers) from the stadium, is offering US$200 rooms, and in Columbus, the Days Inn is charging less than double its usual price over Super Bowl weekend — US$100 for a double room.
