News in brief: Tampa Marriott, Rebel in Chicago

Tampa Marriott sold: Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik’s Strategic Property Partners has for US$150 million acquired the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina. The Tampa Bay Business Journal reported that the deal appears to be a cash transaction as a mortgage has not been filed. The city of Tampa has already approved Vinik’s plan for a hotel-condo project at the corner of Old Water Street and Florida Avenue, which is across the street from the Marriott Waterside.

Rebel has a cause: Neighborhood Development Corp., Chicago, has announced the rebranding and renaming of the company to Rebel Hospitality LLC. Founded by Gene Kornota and Anthony Klok, Rebel owns and manages several independent lifestyle hotels, including dana hotel and spa, Acme Hotel Company and Hawthorne Terrace – all in Chicago – and the Memphis, Tennessee-based Madison Hotel.
