Hotel letting guests pick oranges

An increasing number of hotels are growing produce on-site, but The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain is taking this type of hyper-local sourcing a step further by encouraging guests to lend a hand. Starting this fall, guests at the Marana, Arizona, property will be able to pick oranges, tangelos and red grapefruit from the 42 citrus trees in the hotel’s orchard and then have chefs prepare fresh juice for morning breakfast or an evening cocktail.

The orchard is located within steps of the resort’s Core Restaurant & Wine Bar, which utilizes the fruit in offerings such as the signature Arizona Greyhound cocktail that pairs fresh grapefruit juice with grapefruit-infused vodka. Complimentary fresh juice also is available at the lobby welcome station.

“Having an on-property orchard producing citrus provides us the opportunity to offer our guests the freshest of product — and ‘fresh’ and ‘local’ are two very important concepts for us,” said Hotel Manager Shaun Beucler. “The interaction of picking one’s own fruit also promises to be a memorable experience for guests. How often do you have the opportunity to consume something so natural, especially when traveling?”
