Briefs: Industry loses legend Kerzner | New MGM CEO

Sol Kerzner dies: Sol Kerzner, the South African hotelier and founder of  the Southern Sun hotel group, Sun International and Kerzner International, died of cancer in Cape Town, South Africa. He was 84 and had retired as chairman of Kerzner International in 2014. He launched One&Only Resorts and took his Atlantis brand global with the development of Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai, a US $1.5 billion, 1,500-room resort.

MGM names acting CEO: MGM Resorts International announced that COO and President Bill Hornbuckle has been named acting chief executive officer and president, replacing outgoing Chairman and CEO Jim Murren, wo vacated the position on Sunday.

Central/South American results: In what’s likely a last bit of good news for the hotel industry in Central and South America, STR reported gains in three metrics year-over-year in February. Occupancy rose 0.9%, ADR gained +2.8% and RevPar increased 3.7%. However, the firm said the data had yet to show any affects from the virus.
