Working harder (temporarily) to work smarter

Working harder (temporarily) to work smarter

Since school in our area began, my morning commute has been brutal and often taking me well over an hour to travel 30 miles.

For the past two weeks, I’ve been able to learn the habits of congestion for my route. There are certain areas that break free when I can achieve speeds of 40 miles an hour, only to slow around the next bend to a crawl.

I have been extremely busy and have not had the time to find a better route. I have been extremely busy at work and have not had the time to think about doing things differently or more efficiently.

Last night, I took 5 extra minutes and went to www.mapquest.com to type in my route.  I was able to identify four different ways of getting to my destination. This morning I saved 22 minutes on my morning commute.

When was the last time you took 5 minutes to examine a process that could be improved upon at work (and save hours or generate more revenue)? Please share with me and the readers examples of improvements you have been able to make by temporarily working harder and putting forth the extra effort.
