The right balance

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. Everything suddenly is surrounded by a new light, and you feel that everywhere you look, a glittering and magical atmosphere embraces every bit of the city.

We hoteliers must admit that we start getting into the Christmas mood way too far in advance! Christmas is definitely one of the most important times of the year for hotels, and planning in advance is crucial to be well prepared for the festive season. I personally love all the pre-Christmas preparation, so when everyone is still thinking about seaside destinations, I am already thinking about how we will decorate Dukes for the next Christmas season. It’s my favorite time of the year, and Dukes, being a classic British hotel, is wonderful at Christmas time.

I have to say that the hotel industry is not the only one first in line in the Christmas countdown; in fact, it’s undeniable that more and more each year the Christmas excitement is starting a little bit too early.

All around the city, stores start decorating and offering tempting offers long before you would like to start thinking about Christmas. This just makes me realize how much the feeling of Christmas is changing and how much this special time of the year has turned more and more into a commercial celebration. Christmas is a time of tradition, it’s family time and there’s no better way to celebrate it than with loved ones, but I have the feeling that more and more the truthful meaning of it is fading away.

Going all around the city for Christmas shopping may be some people’s worst nightmare, but many other people actually enjoy having that Christmas atmosphere around them months in advance and love to be out and about in search of the perfect gift. They are the people who are able to find the right balance.

Of course, enjoying this festive season is what matters, so enjoy the wonder of Christmas and embrace the festive atmosphere of this magic moment.

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a healthy 2014!
